"Some accidents leave you with more emotional than physical scars. This one almost destroyed my intimate relationship with my loved ones"
My name is Narayan and I am 51 years old. Two years ago, a minor accident brought about a major change in my life. One rainy day in 2016, while walking I lost my step and fell. This shouldn’t have resulted in anything other than some pain that could be fixed with pain killers. In fact, it became the start of a harrowing experience in my life. I was a little hurt but mostly fine except for a slight pain in my penis. I didn’t ignore it, I did go to the doctor who said it was nothing.
A few months later I learned that this ‘nothing’ was actually more than ‘something’. I had led a healthy active sex life and now I started experiencing pain in my erections.
I thought this was just temporary and would soon go away. But it didn’t. And that is when I went to the doctor, a friend I’ve known for 20 years and is someone I trust.
I was diagnosed with Peyronie’s disease, a condition in which scar tissue forms inside your penis and makes erections painful. The doctor suggested that I undergo surgery to remove the tissue after which I would require an implant for normal penile functioning. I had no idea that a little scar tissue would mean I go through a procedure that frankly worried me! I did some reading about the disease and penile implants so that I could take a more informed decision. But I found nothing that reassured me or told me just what was involved.
The weeks were passing and for me time was running out because I was completely frustrated with the situation, there was no one to talk to who can help me out by sharing the experiences. I wanted to get rid of the scar tissue and did not want to consider a penile implant. I wanted a normal life without the implant. The doctor however, warned me that if I didn’t get the implant, there was a high chance that I would suffer from erectile dysfunction. This just added to my frustration without giving me any real hope.
I spoke to my wife, my brother and my parents and they all suggested that I go for the best option possible, one that would give me back my emotional stability and normal functioning. My wife was fully supportive through it all. Since, we already had children, she was willing to do without any normal sexual activity. But I was adamant;
I wanted the intimacy and I wanted to restore our relationship to how it had been all through our marriage. However, the procedure involving a steep cost for devise and surgery made me think multiple times before I could finally decide on it.
To set my mind at ease, I got a second opinion, but received the same prognosis. That’s when I went ahead and got the implant in September 2017. Within a week, I could start work from home and then in 4-6 weeks, life went back to normal. Everything feels just like before. My mind is relaxed and I feel confident about my own self.
To all those men out there, experiencing similar problems, yes, sex is important!
